Greg Oden Overwhelmingly Wins Indiana's Mr. Basketball

Greg Oden was the overwhelming choice for Indiana Mr. Basketball for 2006, receiving the second-highest percentage of votes in the award's history.

Greg Oden, a 7-foot senior center who has led Lawrence North to three straight class 4A state championships and a 103-7 overall record, received 91.5 percent of the votes cast by coaches and media statewide, The Indianapolis Star reported Sunday.

Only Damon Bailey, who received 95.3 percent of the vote in 1990, won with a higher percentage, reported the Star, which sponsors the award.

Greg Oden, who began playing basketball seriously in fifth grade, will play at Ohio State this fall and already is making plans to play in the NBA.

He has won virtually every national honor possible, including back-to-back Gatorade Player of the Year awards, a feat duplicated only by LeBron James.

"Anybody who doesn't recognize he's the best big man of all time in Indiana high school basketball, and if not the most dominant certainly the most dominant at his position, then they're not being objective or don't know the game," said Hoosier Basketball Magazine publisher Garry Donna.

"Greg Oden, George McGinnis and Oscar Robertson are the most dominant players I've seen," Donna said. "There have been a lot of 6-10, 6-11 players, but there has never been one like Greg Oden. The thing that sets him apart is what sets Bailey and Robertson apart. They think the game. They know the game. They make others better."

A four-year starter, Greg Oden finished his high school career with 1,873 points, 1,058 rebounds and 341 blocked shots.

Greg Oden received 177 1/2 out of 194 votes cast. He was trailed by his teammate and friend, Mike Conley, whom Greg Oden said should have shared the honor. Conley, one of the top-ranked point guards in the nation, received 7 1/2 votes.
